Helping an App Developer to Monitor Households

Client

GenGame is an app developer helping people manage their energy better to save money and reduce their carbon footprint.

Background

GenGame’s gamification app incentivises households to shift their electricity consumption away from times when the electricity grid is overstretched.

This usually happens late afternoons during the colder months of the year, but can happen at any time. So a conscientious household ensures to switch the washing machine on outside these times.

The incentives available from National Grid work much better with consumers when packaged into a fun game with prizes, which is what Gengame does.

Need

GenGame works best when consumers can get real-time data and when they can automatically switch their appliances on and off.

GenGame selected GridDuck as partner on several projects, after testing a range of alternatives.

GenGame integrated with the GridDuck API, which means the app directly controls appliances in the home.

Challenges & our approach

Equipping households with IOT systems can be complex in terms of the logistics and installation support. GridDuck handled the logistics for Gengame and created simple installation guides for each hardware item.

Another challenge is to integrate with EV chargers, batteries, heat pumps and solar PV. GridDuck was able to integrate with a number of manufacturers, enabling households to directly manage their solar PV and battery from their phone.

Result

The relationship has grown stronger with each joint project, both teams enjoying cresting innovations and overcoming challenges. Contact us to learn more.
